I am Dean Herbert, the founder of Ebeats Direct, a provider of tools and tuition for modern drummers and electronic musicians. I am a Birmingham drum teacher with more than two decades of playing experience, 12 of which have been as a full-time professional. Additionally I have lectured and tutored drums and music technology to individuals and classes for nearly ten years.
Based in Birmingham I also produce and perform music regularly giving me both a practical foundation for my work and an extremely high level of industry knowledge. My students range from 5 to 65 years of age and study at grades from entry to advanced degree level. I teach one-to-one in my centrally located studio or at the student’s home address and provide workshops at educational establishments and academies across the country.
I also demonstrate drums and digital audio workstation products on behalf of manufacturers and retailers where my experience in performance, recording and tuition make me expertly positioned to educate users and potential customers.
In each case I pride myself on being patient with students, engaging with larger classes and professional with industry clients.
Areas of Expertise
I work with individuals of all ages and learning academies to engage and excite students within a structured, goal-orientated tuition process. My aim is to help drummers, musicians and engineers make serious progress whilst having fun along the way.
I also work with percussion and musical electronics manufacturers and product distributors to demonstrate their products to customers. In each case I am experienced, professional, enthusiastic and entirely focused on conveying the features and benefits of each product.
I have been having lessons with Dean more than five years. He is a great teacher and makes lessons enjoyable. He has taught me to work with clicks and backing tracks and has paid a lot of attention to detail to improve my hand technique. This has included Moeller, German and French Timpini. I have learnt many songs that I love playing like “Lonely Day” by System of a Down and “Smells like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana.Luke
I began having drum lessons with Dean about 6 months ago, and he has transformed not only my playing but also the way I approach the instrument. I had 15 years experience of playing in various musical styles from marching to heavy metal bands. I had a year off from playing due to a wrist injury, “I couldn’t play the drums for 2 minutes without pain”!. After a few minutes of watching me play, Dean identified my technique problems. 6 weeks later and I could play for 2 hours with no pain! Personally this was a huge step forward for me. Since then we have covered many musical styles and methods of practicing including Latin, Co-ordinated Independance, Linear Concepts & the Moeller technique amongst many others. Dean encourages individuality and pushes you to find your own ‘voice’ behind the drums. He is an approachable person which makes the lessons relaxed and enjoyable & I always leave a lesson with a sense of accomplishment and inspiration to practice. I would recommend lessons with Dean to players of any age and ability.Ian
Dean has taught my son drums for several years and has always been structured, knowledgeable and engaging. My son is autistic with learning difficulties, and yet has consistently achieved high eighty percent merit score’s, going through Debut to Grade 7 of the Rock School Syllabus. My Son always looks forward to his lessons and needs no encouragement to practice on his own. He always comes away from Lesson’s with a Smile on his face, having learned something meaningful and having had fun whilst learning.
As well as teaching a formal drum Syllabus, Dean has also been able to pass on ‘inside knowledge’ of the practical art of drumming, that has enabled my Son to have the confidence to play in Bands himself and to explore his own interest in a variety of styles of music.
As a performing/recording musician myself, I also recognise Dean’s own ability as a performing musician through his excellent work with ‘The Edwin Starr Band’, ‘The Quik Beats’ & many others whilst his knowledge of music theory, technology and the music business is second to none. In addition Dean also has extensive knowledge and understanding of the practical art of recording music, from both sides of the Mixing Desk, and is always willing to share his knowledge in a meaningful, relevant and practical way. Music is clearly a passion for Dean and I cannot commend him highly enough, and would recommend his services to anyone with aspirations to progress in their own musical dreams and ambitions.Andrew
Dean is a brilliant teacher. Learning an instrument as an adult can be challenging and it can be strange having a ‘teacher’ when you’re in your mid thirties! I’ve been playing drums for 4 years and Dean has been my teacher for a couple of years now. My lessons with Dean are fun and he structures them to suit me. As well as general playing and grades, we’ve done a lot of work on my technique, including the Moeller Method, and French and German timpani, oh and also on remembering to breathe! He’s really helped me to develop my confidence behind the kit. I also really like that Dean plays live regularly. I find it’s great to go along and watch your teacher put into practice what they are teaching you. To me, it shows he knows what he’s talking about. Dean is a great teacher, a genuine guy and a person you can also have a laugh with.H. Jamieson
Dean has taught my eight year old and 17 year old sons now for two years. Both are very different but Dean has been able to adapt to their different learning styles brilliantly. His firm and positive nature enables my sons to learn and perform to their utmost abilities. Dean knows how to get the best out of both of my boys and aims for perfection throughout. Qualities that prove him to be an outstanding teacher. Above all, Dean is very sincere and my sons have made remarkable progress considering they started as absolute beginners. They both look forward to their drum lessons every week.J. Mittal
Nathaniel is 17 & recently started having lessons with Dean and the transformation in his drumming skills has been outstanding to say the least. Nathaniel is now able to play from sheet music whilst developing other skills, which has boosted his confidence tremendously. Dean has also been very helpful in advising me in respect to Nathaniel’s academic progress & has been instrumental in providing advice & extra support for his learning difficulties as well as giving advice with his music studies at college. With these factors in mind, I would have no hesitation in recommending eBeatsDirect to anyone who is interested in learning to play drums. Thanks Dean for your continued support.Barbara
After 35 years of drumming I was aware my playing had become boring and I lacked a lot of the skills needed to improve. I gave Dean a ring and after a quick evaluation of what kind of things I was looking for he booked me in for the following week. Straight away he began to show me techniques that I had never been taught before and whilst its hard for an old dog to break his bad habits it’s really working. My control and therefore beats are that much better & my playing has already got more innovative which is what I really wanted. Whatever age or stage you’re at, I would thoroughly recommend eBeats Direct and Dean as a teacher.Nigel
Dean has been fantastic in nurturing our 10 year old Lucien over the last few years. His confidence as a drummer and in general, has grown hugely and we know that’s down to Dean’s excellent teaching methods. Always encouraging and fun (which we believe is the best way to learn), Dean has continued to provide a relaxed style of teaching while communicating clearly and directly with great effect. Big thanks.Dr Robert & Blanche Smith
I have been having drumming tuition with Dean “Dino” Herbert for over 2 years and have enjoyed every minute of it! The sessions are relaxed and fun but are structured and often demanding. When a particular technique or combination of movements are difficult to grasp, Dean will use varying teaching approaches until he finds the one that the student can grasp. Dean is very flexible with tuition arrangements and will go out of his way to accommodate dates & times to suit students. I am 62 years old and see that the age range of his students goes right down to pre-teens, and Dean has the experience, professionalism and enthusiasm to adapt to all age ranges and abilities.
If you’ve ever thought about wanting drum lessons, but are not sure about taking the plunge, talk to Dean and give it a go … you won’t regret it!Steve Cullen
Dean is a fantastic teacher and an incredible player. I have been playing drums for 10 years now and have been having drum lessons with him for around 5 years. In those 5 years Dean has taught me not only the practical side of drumming but the theory side as well. Things such as note & rest values, appropriate ways to count, scoring parts and so on which has helped me hugely with my college music course. Since Dean has been teaching me I have enjoyed my lessons more than I did with previous teachers. I highly recommend Dean to everyone, no matter what age, level or ability you are at, Dean is a great tutor & someone who I now consider to be a good friend.Harry
As a self taught rock/metal drummer for 10 years, I was getting bored of drumming. I then began having lessons with Dean and it is the best thing I have done – I wish I had started sooner! Dean has been teaching me a wide range of music styles and time signatures whilst working on my technique allowing me to play faster with more dynamic whilst taking less effort. Dean understands how I learn and if ever I struggle to grasp something he always finds another way to help me pick it up. No matter what your skill level is I highly recommend Dean as your drum teacher!Mike
